![]() Engines with high bypass ratios (the ratio of air bypassing the engine core to that flowing through the core) results in lower exhaust speed and thus less noise. The FAA has mandated that aircraft designed after Janumust be compliant with new, quieter decibel restrictions. The good news is that the noise levels are decreasing, forced by regulation and steady improvements in engine and aircraft design. Surprisingly, Canadian researchers found that "high speed turbulent flow over an aircraft fuselage is responsible for a substantial component of the interior noise, and is probably the most important source of cabin noise for jet powered passenger aircraft in steady cruise." It's the plane itself moving through the air delivering most of the cabin noise, and not simply the engines. However, in-flight noise also results from airflow around surfaces such as wings, flaps and landing gear. Passengers intuitively know that the engines are the main source of aircraft noise. So, which aircraft are the quietest aloft? And where should you aim to sit on board? First, What's Causing the Noise? On the Air France flight, had I been sitting on the lower deck in economy, behind the engines, it would not have seemed quite so quiet. The truth is my ears perceive the Q400 to be about twice as loud as the A380.Ī 2018 study published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology points the way: how loud you perceive the cabin noise to be depends on the aircraft, and where you sit on board. The "Q" of the Q400 is supposed to stand for quiet a noise-cancelling system is built in. There was a dull roar during taxiing and that roar increased to a visceral, low, rapid thumping as the second engine was started and the plane throttled up. The second flight was aboard a Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft from Newark to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Of course - lucky me! - I was firmly ensconced in first class, at the front of the plane. I barely even noticed we had taken off, let alone the relatively subtle roar that is the spooling of the engines at takeoff. The first was an Air France Airbus A380 from New York JFK to Paris CDG.

To reach Black Elk’s cabin, Neihardt would have crossed Wounded Knee Creek, which has its beginning not far from the hamlet of Wounded Knee a dozen or so miles southeast of Manderson. Neihardt was the Nebraska state poet when he traveled to meet with Black Elk, heading west from Manderson a couple of miles on what he described as a “dead-end road that led through the treeless, yellow hills to Black Elk's home - a one-room cabin with weeds growing out of the dirt roof.” And it strengthened and further informed the self-image of Native people themselves. Published in 1932, it was called the bible for all tribes by Vine Deloria, Jr., whose 1969 non-fiction book Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto was a bit biblical in its own right, especially among young Native Americans and their supporters pushing for justice and respect.īlack Elk Speaks reshaped non-Native perspectives on Native Americans and their traditions and culture in a way no book had before, nor probably has since. Nicholas Black Elk had held Tibbitts’ job generations earlier, along with more detailed duties that included reservation-wide evangelization, Catholic instruction and leading prayer services, offering scriptural interpretation and even standing in for priests at burials or baptisms. They got both, along with a welcoming smile and information on Black Elk, in the larger hall behind the church from Parish Coordinator Joyce Tibbitts. But they also needed a snack and a drink. One False Move is a 1992 American crime thriller film directed by Carl Franklin and co-written by Billy Bob Thornton. ![]() Regardless of the sonnets' authorship, The Four Seasons can be classified as program music, instrumental music intended to evoke something extra-musical, and an art form which Vivaldi was determined to prove sophisticated enough to be taken seriously. Though it is not known who wrote the accompanying sonnets, the theory that Vivaldi wrote them is supported by the fact that each sonnet is broken into three sections, each neatly corresponding to a movement in the concerto. There is some debate as to whether the four concertos were written to accompany four sonnets or vice versa. ![]() 8, RV 269, "Spring" ( La primavera)Īll performed by the Wichita State University Chamber Players, an ensemble of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra ![]() Structure Title page of Vivaldi's Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Invenzione, which included The Four Seasons Vivaldi divided each concerto into three movements (fast–slow–fast), and, likewise, each linked sonnet into three sections. The music is elsewhere similarly evocative of other natural sounds. For example, in the middle section of "Spring", when the goatherd sleeps, his barking dog can be heard in the viola section. Vivaldi took great pains to relate his music to the texts of the poems, translating the poetic lines themselves directly into the music on the page. The concerti therefore stand as one of the earliest and most detailed examples of what would come to be called program music-in other words, music with a narrative element. Unusually for the period, Vivaldi published the concerti with accompanying sonnets (possibly written by the composer himself) that elucidated what it was in the spirit of each season that his music was intended to evoke. They were a revolution in musical conception: in them Vivaldi represented flowing creeks, singing birds (of different species, each specifically characterized), a shepherd and his barking dog, buzzing flies, storms, drunken dancers, hunting parties from both the hunters' and the prey's point of view, frozen landscapes, and warm winter fires. The inspiration for the concertos is not the countryside around Mantua, as initially supposed, where Vivaldi was living at the time, since according to Karl Heller they could have been written as early as 1716–1717, while Vivaldi was engaged with the court of Mantua only in 1718. ![]() Though three of the concerti are wholly original, the first, "Spring", borrows patterns from a sinfonia in the first act of Vivaldi's contemporaneous opera Il Giustino. The Four Seasons is the best known of Vivaldi's works. They were published in 1725 in Amsterdam, together with eight additional concerti, as Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione ( The Contest Between Harmony and Invention). These were composed around 1718−1720, when Vivaldi was the court chapel master in Mantua.
